Money-Saving travel tips and information on airlines and hotels of Fiji.
Insider tips for making reservations to the over 300 islands of Fiji.

GETTING THERE
Fiji is 10 hours non-stop flying time from Los Angeles (a little longer if you have a stopover in Hawaii). Two fine airlines offering service from the West Coast of the United States are Air Pacific and Air New Zealand.

Operating from the West Coast is AIR PACIFIC with their Boeing 747 fleet, coach seating across 3-4-3. Service from the West Coast with AIR NEW ZEALAND is aboard the Boeing 767, coach seating across 2-3-2. Air Pacific is known as the International Airline of Fiji. From the moment you board your flight, the unique spirit of Fiji will embrace you as the genuine friendship, warm greetings and gracious smiles of the Fijian crew welcome you. Air New Zealand offers personalized service with attention focused on passengers' individual needs and menus created by world-renowned chef. This level of in-flight service has earned awards. And, I would certainly agree their service is exceptional.

The above airlines are scheduled carriers offering pre-assigned seating. Check in time is 3 hours prior to departure time.

INTERNATIONAL AIRFARES
Air transportation in economy class from Los Angeles to Fiji starts at $1059 based on a round trip, low season, mid-week, advance purchase, coach fare. This economy class fare is the price the airlines quote to you if you were to call them direct. When you purchase a pre-planned travel package you save substantially on this airfare. United States departure tax and airport fees of approximately $75 must be added to your international air ticket. Fijian departure tax of FJ$30 must be paid at time of departure from Fiji.

TRAVEL BETWEEN ISLANDS
Ferries, launches, airplanes, helicopters, and seaplanes service an extensive network of docks and airfields throughout the islands and resorts. The domestic airlines of Air Fiji and Sunflower Airlines offer an extensive routing system connecting numerous destinations throughout Fiji. These airlines offer "air passes" which can be just another component to a pre-planned package that will save you money. Other domestic carriers are Turtle Airways, Island Hoppers and Air Wakaya.

Having served the islands of Fiji for over 30 years, Air Fiji is Fiji's premier domestic airline. They service Mana, Taveuni, Savusavu, Labasa, Vanuabalavu, Kadavu, Lakeba, Moala, Gau, Cicia, Ovalau, Koro, Malolo Lailai, Suva and Nadi. Scheduled flight service is to key tourist destinations. Sun Air is Fiji's largest domestic airline providing daily scheduled services from Nadi to destinations such as the Mamanuca Islands (Malolo Lailai and Mana), Savusavu, Kadavu, Teveuni, Labasa, Vatulele and Yasawa. Sunflower's fleet includes the BN2 Islander, DH6 Twin Otters and the Shorts SD330 aircraft.

The jet powered helicopter service of Island Hoppers has been operating in Fiji for over 20 years. You can arrive at your resort accommodations in breath-taking style. They offer a fast convenient transfer from the Nadi airport or Denarau Island (location of the Sheraton hotels) to all the Mamanuca Island resorts. Islands Hoppers can make your transfer to and from your resort destination a breeze with your own special custom itinerary. They also offer a variety of scenic tours to suite your interest and budget from a 20-minute tour to an individually tailored all day adventure. They operate a fleet of Eurocopter AS350 helicopters.

The seaplane fleet of Turtle Airways consists of 4 Cessna 206's and 1 Dehaviland Beaver which carries 4 and 6 passengers respectively. Departure to and from the seaplane bases (a short transfer from the Nadi airport) and the Sheraton Royal Beach to any resort in the Mamanucas. Air Wakaya offers an early morning flight to Wakaya Island from Nadi or Nausori. The transfer from Wakaya to the main land is 12noon. They operate a Britten Norman Island aircraft. This is the airline you would fly if you were guests at the Wakaya Club. (cargo/luggage limits: 45kg per person)

SELECTING THE RIGHT LOCATION AND THE PERFECT RESORT FOR YOU
Fiji is divided into 8 main areas or regions where accommodations can be found. These regions include the "Nadi Area", "Nadi Offshore Islands", "Coral Coast", "Pacific Harbour", "Lautoka and Rakiraki", "Outer Islands", "Suva City" and "The North".

A good way to help make your selection is to determine your interests. Do you want to hike, trek, mountain bike, kayak, snorkel, sail, scuba dive, river raft, water ski, cultural excursions, shop, visit a rain forest, horse back ride, golf, tennis, or just relax on a pristine beach. Be sure to select a resort that satisfies your interests.

The second part of your decision should be the type of accommodations and hotel amenities you prefer.
If this is a honeymoon or a romantic get away you might prefer to stay in a secluded intimate luxury resort. If this is a family vacation and you are taking along the children you will want a hotel that offers lots of activities for the kids.

How you experience Fiji will depend to a great degree on the hotels you select. Your hotel is likely to be the center of your activities. Hotels in Fiji are unique, unlike anything you will find in other destinations of the world. They can vary from a large 300-room luxury resort to a few Polynesian bungalows scattered on a palm-fringed beach.

You will find many of the large international-style hotels along the Coral Coast. For some travelers the larger resorts offer just the right mix of familiarity and tropical ambience. Other reasons are price, selection of restaurants and choice of activities. Even though these may be large complexes there are no high-rise hotels, and most are no higher than a coco palm. Many hotels incorporate local and natural building materials and feature Fijian design motifs to heighten the feeling of a vacation in this exotic South Seas paradise.

Many of the off shore islands are known for their intimate island resorts. The term "resort" can be a misnomer. In many instances, your hotel will be the only one on your island, so they are often called "private island resorts". These unique "one to an island" hideaways offer a special combination of pampering and unspoiled beauty. Many of these small retreats hosts no more than 7 or 8 couples at a time…contributing to that castaway island feel. Most of the island resorts have adopted the traditional Fijian bure (thatched-roof cottage based on traditional village houses but with modern amenities). Bures are placed carefully to combine maximum privacy with the best views. Most bures have a bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and lanai. Much of the fun of coming to Fiji is being able to stay in a thatched roof bure located in a tropical garden or on a beautiful palm lined beach. For the ultimate getaway, choose a vacation that features this traditional Fijian lodging.

It is difficult to use such standard hotel descriptions such as "deluxe" or "first class". The reason is that Fiji is not a standard place. You may elect to stay at a small off shore island resort in a beachfront bure, cooled naturally by the ocean breezes, or in a large resort complex offering several restaurants, pools, tennis courts and golf course.

What strikes you, as the "best" will depend entirely on your own picture of paradise. We try to make that picture as clear as possible for you, so that you can choose with confidence. To help you make the right choice; we have prepared detailed description of each hotel and its location on the following pages, and rated them based on the quality of their facilities and services. You will find our "starfish" hotel rating system given by eTravelBound through our years of South Pacific expertise. They are not associated with ratings of other companies or organizations.
