This is in the heart of Fiji's "Sugar Belt" with thousands of small holdings cultivating sugar cane for mills in Lautoka, Ba and Rakiraki. The coastline faces Bligh Water and the Yasawa Islands can be seen on the horizon. As well as producing sugar, the area operates extensive mature plantations of Caribbean pine trees.

Lautoka
About 15 miles north of Nadi International Airport is Fiji's second port and next largest city after Suva. much less of a resort area than Nadi but still a good base for the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. It boasts a large produce and handicraft market and is the jumping off point for the Blue Lagoon Cruise Line.

Rakiraki
The northern most town on Viti Levu is 90 miles north each of Nadi and is less than a 2 hour drive. Rakiraki is surrounded by stunning scenery and sugar cane plantations. Close by at Ellington Wharf you can catch a ferry to Vanua Levu.

Trekking the Abaca Area:
Abaca is a trekkers paradise. Nestled in a small valley near the base of Mount Koroyanitu is this picturesque village and the gateway to some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the islands. As a way of generating income in an environmentally benign way, the villages have opened their native lands to visitors by combining traditional Fijian hospitality with the modern notion of eco-tourism.

Abaca is set in a tropical wilderness of primeval rainforests and plunging waterfalls against a backdrop of black lava mountains. Footpaths which have been used for generations follow the ridges and canyons providing something for everyone, from the leisurely stroller on a nature walk, to the experience hiker seeking a challenge. For the ambitious hiker, it is a challenging hour's trek from the village to the summit of Batilamu, where photographs can capture a panorama of the coastline of Viti Levu with the Yasawa Islands on the horizon. Mere mortals marvel at the "Sleeping Giant" from Nadi.....at Batilamu, you're on top of it!

A full day trek takes you through Fiji's only un-logged mountain forest to Mount Koroyanitu, Fiji's third highest peak.

Along with its scenic splendor, Abaca offers a unique cultural experience. Fijians have been walking these mountains for more than a hundred generations and are tied spiritually and physically to the land of their ancestors. Your village guide, as much a part of this land as the scenery, will amaze you with his knowledge of nature and terrain. Every bend in the river, every rock outcropping seems to have its own name and an associated story.

Organized transport in the way of 4-wheel drive departs Lautoka daily except Sundays.
